There are 10 mountains in total so deciding which one to ride can be a tricky question – it’s like being confronted with a pizza menu that has so many good options that you can’t decide whether you take one loaded with meat or something with the lot. Some offer great steeps and awesome terrain but present a age old attitude of riding off piste. Other’s offer immense powder but are harder to access.
All-in-all it is hard to be disappointed in any of the mountains in Hakuba – heck that’s why people return here year-on-year in search of that famous Japow! Here we list our top 3 favourite mountains and why:
1. Iwatake: With skiable terrain on all aspects Iwatake offers the shredder access like no other mountain in the range. The powder is immense, the crowds view and all importantly a relaxed attitude to riding off-piste means there is more terrain to discover. A great mountain for all levels of riding.
2. Cortina: The most relaxed attitude out of any mountain in the valley Cortina is one open bowl for you to explore. Situated at the northern most end of the Hakuba range it also gets the most amount of snowfall. Crowds can over run the mountain so best to head their for first tracks.
3. Happo One: The biggest mountain in the range Happo One also offer the longest run at about 8kms in total. Good powder in the trees, long groomed runs and a good apres scene all mean Happo One is a mountain not to be missed.
